Is There A Diet That Can Cure Ankylosing Spondylitis?

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a form of arthritis. Over the years, there have been a number of eating plans touted for the relief of arthritis. Unfortunately for those suffering from AS and other forms of arthritis, none of these diets have ever been proven to work.

However, there are many anecdotal reports of success with diet versus arthritis. This means that almost all of these diets have worked for somebody. Since the cause of ankylosing spondylitis is unknown, it's also unknown why a certain diet might work, or why it might work for one person but not another. Regardless, if you're motivated, it couldn't hurt to try one of these eating plans. Do your research and understand exactly what the diet requires and why the originator thinks it will work before beginning.

One diet for arthritis that has been publicized quite a bit is the low-starch diet created by Dr. Alan Ebringer, a London Rheumatologist who believes that a certain strain of bacteria residing in the gut causes ankylosing spondylitis, and that a low starch diet reduces the incidence of these bacteia. The diet requires one to reduce or eliminate bread and flour products, potatoes, and rice while increasing animal proteins, fruit, vegetables, and milk products.

Conversely, some AS sufferers have claimed relief by eliminating all milk products from their diet. Others have greatly improved their condition by eliminating all vegetables from the nightshade family from their diet. These include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant, and other less common varieties. Technically, these are all considered to be fruits rather than vegetables, but are commonly referred to as vegetables.

Also, there is the Chilton Program from Floyd H. Chilton, Ph.D. Dr Chilton's program reduces inflammation by reducing the amount of arachidonic acid in the diet. Arachidonic acid promotes the creation of substances that act as inflammatory messengers in the body, increasing the amount of inflammation. Reducing these messengers will reduce inflammation, according to Dr. Chilton.

Finally, there is another modality which has been somewhat successful in controlling arthritis, and that is fasting. Obviously, this is a short term solution. You can't fast forever. There has been some long term success reported by following the fast with a strict vegetarian diet.

Why are so many varying techniques all reported as successful by someone? Perhaps it works similarly to food allergies. We know that some people are allergic to certain foods. Others are also allergic, but to completely different foods. Perhaps, as different people have different, or no, allergic reactions to various foods, they could also have different, or no, reactions to those foods when it comes to the mechanisms that trigger inflammation, which is the root cause of ankylosing spondylitis. This would explain why fasting seems to have the best outcome of all.

One last point, which should be obvious, is that excess weight puts extra stress on bones and joints. This is the last thing an AS patient needs, so any diet that helps one to achieve a healthy weight is beneficial in this regard.
